Safeway opened at this location on February 1, 1956. Mark Peterson was the manager, he would eventually buy Moonwink Grocery at 9th and NW J.

Safeway in Miami robbed at gunpoint on March 18, 1956.

A month and a half later, they would be robbed at gunpoint. It wouldn’t be the last time.

Safeway was a familiar site on North Main, along with Farrier’s on the other side of the road. Many a Boomer kid has memories of one or both places.
